I saw these COM errors, on my EPO Test machines, when I tested updating systems from VSE 8.0i to VSE 8.5i.

My test setup consists of a EPO 3.6.1 server and about 6 workstations, XP, VISTA and 2000. On one of my test XP system, running VSE 8.0i and Anti-Spyware module, I sent a deployment task to uninstall Anti-Spyware module, then VSE 8.0i. Then the deployment task was set to install VSE 8.5i and Anti-Spyware 8.5i. Somehow, VSE 8.0 did not fully uninstall itself when VSE 8.5i was installed. When performing, Update Now, from the client system I saw that it was getting the same COM errors that you are reporting.

I check McAfee's Knowledge base and came across an article referring to this COM error and VSE 8.5i. It is caused by the registry having both VSE 8.0i and VSE 8.5i registry keys. It recommends deleting all the VSE 8.0i keys, this fixed the issue. The only problem is that it is a very manual process.

I am going to be doing some more testing today on the best way to upgrade systems from VSE 8.0i to VSE 8.5i, don't want to see this issue on all these systems.

Thats very helpful indeed!! Many thanks for that. I will give it a try and report back with what i find.

              Nickpledge,

Search the McAfee knowledge base for article number 6307187, this is the one that explains the issue with VSE 8.5i and the COM error. It can prevent Autoupdate from updating the DAT files.

This is going to cause a problem for us. We are in a manual environment and don't have the man power to fix peoples registry settings. I am going to do some more testing to see how to avoid the issue.

One quick question, did you see the problem after upgrading people's virusscan from 8.0i to 8.5i?
              • 4. RE: Error occurred while loading COM component
I uninstalled everything mcafee from users machines and deleted anything to do with mcafee in registry but still has the problem.

And yes, this problem has only now come to light from upgrading from 8.0 to 8.5i

                  nickpledge,

Did your systems have the Anti-Spyware module installed on them? We had that module installed on the test client system that gaves us the error.

I usually prefer to tell EPO to "remove" software rather than select "upgrade". Later in the day, I will be testing several scenarios to see what is causing this problem. I don't want it too occur on hundreds of systems as it will cause us to manual fix them. we don't have the time or manpower to deal with a major problem like this.
                  • 6. RE: Error occurred while loading COM component
yeah we have got anti Spyware on all these machines. Let me know how you get on. Indeed a manually repair is not an option for us as we have 208 clients.

Have been unable to reproduce the COM error message. Have tried a lot of different scenarios on updating systems from VSE 8.0 to VSE 8.5i. Have tried with and without Anti-spyware module.

It looks like it only happens when uninstalling VSE 8.0i glitches in some way before VSE 8.5i gets installed. This is a pain as it might happen on real systems like what you are seeing.

How many systems have you seen get this COM error? I have been testing with 2 test XP systems and so far both are updating without error.
                      • 8. RE: Error occurred while loading COM component
So far that i know of its 2 machines both XP SP2. It may be more, but right now my full concentration is on machines unprotected!

Both were running VSE 8.0I with version 8 of the spyware, and upgrading them both through EPO to 8.5 VSE and spyware 8.5.

The count is now 4 machines. All of these machines produces an error once outlook has been opened also! The scanotli.dll could not be found.
