So is it installed ie do you have the McAfee shield in the system tray?
If so try going to navigation and general settings and alerts and disable access protection and try updating. Reenable Access protection after the update.
If it is not actually installed try a remove and reinstall
and then call support for your country as they then can assist you.

Some things to check, did you completely remove any previous security software and use its removal tool if available?
What operating system is this and is it totally up to date, including Internet Explorer, even if you never use it?
(Some software use IE silently in the background, including McAfee).

@I have yet to uninstall the previous security software, I'll try later today when I go home.
Yes you must uninstall the old software first and make sure all traces of it are removed.
