I would assume you are referring to McAfee Total Protection. For it to have been functioning properly initially, and suddenly you are having issues. I would hope that you have not picked up any Malware/Pups. You may try running the McAfee Mvt :http://mvt.mcafee.com/mvt/en-us/downloadindex.html to see if it detects any issues
Then I would possibly run a couple of tools from from this Link: Anti-Spyware/Malware & Hijacker Tools for a second opinion I would run Malwarebytes (Free) To keep it Free follow the instructions just before downloading. I would follow up with AdwCleaner.
Should you still experience issues, you can always contact Technical Support 24/7 (Free Via Phone/Chat Being much quicker:
Hope this helps...

Of course I am assuming you are current and up to date with all of your Windows Updates/Add-Ons. To include Internet Explorer even if one does not use it. McAfee and other programs require it to be in order to function properly.
In addition make certain you have no pre-existing Security Software with RTS running on your system also. McAfee will disable Windows Defender upon installation, due to it having Anti-Virus capabilities on Windows 8/8.1. Malwarebytes of course is a On Demand Scan and entirely by design is compatible with your McAfee Protection.
I am not concluding that this contributes to your issues, however you may find these two articles most informative:
As I have the software installed on Win 8.1 Pro w/Media Center x64 and haven't seen high usage at all just thought I'd add my 2¢-worth. Checked for any competing security software too as that can be a cause of this.
As CD has ably stated, Technical Support is probably better to deal with this than we are here. At least they can be asked to escalate the issue if at first they can't solve it.
Just had a second thought....if you have an onboard email client don't store emails in the Inbox; make sub-folders for storage, as the software constantly scans the inbox.
