I'm afraid I have no idea why it should be doing that and I can't really compare as I have it on Win 8.1 Pro w/MC .
Do you have competing software active or any indication of malware?
Also make sure your Win 8 is totally up to date and includes IE11 as McAfee uses it regardless of your default browser settings.

Was there any pop up message that McAfee is about to Reboot your machine and whether did this happen after McAfee installed updates. Am unsure how you arrived at this conclusion. Haven't heard of McAfee automatically Restarting computer though a setting is available to Shut Down when a scan doesn't find any threats.
