This error sounds Endpoint Encryption. Can you please clarify which product are you using?
based on the available information there are 3 KBs identified for EEPC 6.x & 7.0.x (McAfee KnowledgeBase - Endpoint Encryption for PC 7.0.x and 6.x Error Codes and Messages)

i'm using McAfee Drive Encryption Go Version number: 220.127.116.114
this i a new dell latitude E5450 laptop that i'm trying to encrypt the McAfee Drive Encryption Go Version number: 18.104.22.1684. Could it be the BIOS version on the machine? I did the same thing on an HP laptop and the encryption went through successful.

Did you run a GO Compatibility test? Dell and other vendors often have utilities and disk tools that are incompatible with MDE. The error code you gave is consistent with this type of error.
I always encourage customers to use GO in a Pre- and Post-Activation state. In addition to helping determine if systems are capable of running MDE it can also be a useful troubleshooting tool for basic communications with Agents. It also provides a means of reporting if a system is experiencing a drive failure - even on unencrypted devices...
