I believe with the * there the exclusion will be looking for files not folders so your current exclusions may not be doing what you think they are. However your thinking is correct. The proper way to exclude a directory is to end with the slash.

I did see that and have read it quite a few times, which does mention "A single asterisk * wildcard can be used to denote single directory names"
With that wording I think it may be not including the files in that directory, only subfolders which fall underneath and its subsequent subfolders as well.
