It says at 0 per cent for long periods of time it just says scanning it doesnt say its scanning rootkit.
Did you do as Peacekeeper Suggested? Download and install the Latest (MVT)? From the Link PK inserted, you can go directly to Technical Support. If there are any issues still present.
Are you current and up to date with all of your Windows Updates, to include Internet Explorer? McAfee and other important programs depend on it to function properly. This is to include all Addons/Extensions. Especially Adobe Flash Player ( 18.104.22.168)
Have you been experiencing this problem for a period of time,or simply just started?
Do you have any remnants of any Ant-Virus you may have previously Installed?
You may try the following workaround also,if it (Hangs) : VirusScan stops scanning at 98% or 99% complete
May I ask what version of McAfee you are subscribed to?

Please Clarify the below,
1. Do you have large sized zip files present on your PC
2. Is Windows and Internet explorer up to date
3. Do you have Removable Disks / Network Drives enabled in your PC
4. The name of your Product Suite and its version details will help
