It sounds like adware so I recommend running AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes Free, both linked in the last link in my signature below.
NOTE: to keep Malwarebytes free of charge do NOT accept the free trial offer at any stage of the download or installation process.

Many thanks Ex_Brit. Will get onto to it asap. Found " search protect" hiding away in the programs list but it wants admin rights to be uninstalled even though I am the admin.
Many thanks for the prompt reply. I think "search protect" must be the culprit. I wonder how Total Protection missed it?
Please read the following ,most informative:PUPs - Potentially Unwanted Programs - Basics
Also, if you have Administrative Rights. You may have to try and run it in Safe Mode/With Networking.
It may be your UAC causing your permission issues. Try (Right Clicking) on the Program, and see if you can (Run as Administrator)
Is this Windows7 Service Pack1?
Here is a Removal Guide for "Search Protect", it basically uses the same Tools as Peter suggested.
With more instructions, pertaining to your Browsers, etc.
Hi and thanks for the extra information. McAfee has been detecting the PUP and I kept asking for it to be removed not realising it was not a single program but multiple intrusions. I have run the two malware/adware programs and things are much better.I'm using Windows 8.1 and getting to grips with it has been a lot harder than my previous, ZX Spectrum, BBC Acorn, WIn.98, XP and Vista and all the school Nimbus suites I used to look after. Have used AVG free since it came into being and never had any trouble but this was pre-installed so I decided to give it a try. I'll obviously have to give it a lot more attention until things settle down. Thanks again for your invaluable advice.
