IE6 is unsafe and obsolete, please update to IE8 a.s.a.p. Also if your XP is anything less than SP3 then it is also practically obsolete and very out of date as soon Microsoft will no longer support anything less than SP3, so install all the latest updates.
This is a Windows issue and I doubt it's anything to do with McAfee or an infection. From what I've read on the internet the best solution is to format and reinstall the system. Not a repair.
What you could do though is as follows. Install Hijackthis and post its log on one of the following forums for expert advice:

Thanks for the responses. I do not want to reformat and reinstall XP. That would be losing all my data and admitting defeat, only as a last resort. And I would not be in forums like these.
Then try the Hijackthis route. Good luck!
