There is a bug with current versions of the software that can cause the hanging at 98/99% issue. But not sure why IE11 would crash. Have you tried another browser?
Make sure Windows is totally up to date and that browser's and their add-ons are all up to date too.
I would open a case with Technical Support if you are both experiencing this. It's free of charge by phone or online chat and linked under Useful Links at the top of this page.
Moved this to VirusScan as it appears to be a problem with that aspect of the software.
Have tried the solution that Technical services suggested, run scan with nothing else running.
Once again stopped at 98% on "rootkit" and stayed there for 45 minutes before I cancled the operation.
Still unable to get IE 11 to work.
Everything went pear shaped after update for McAfee was downloaded on the 22/4/14.
Now what can I do to get both to work as they are meant to?
Not sure what to suggest other than go back to Technical Support and ask them to escalate the issue and tell them that a Mcafee update appears to have also broken IE11.
There are various levels of support and they can and often do, escalate to a higher level if asked to.
The fix for the hanging issue is due in June apparently, I know that is a long way off. Meanwhile there should be a way of patching it that they know about.
I just checked my 8.1 and IE11 and no issues and with mine the software only hangs for about 4 minutes when scanning reaches that stage, but then I'm using our beta software on that OS.
If I may add to the discussion, Albeit I am running Windows 7 Service Pack 1- Fully updated, I have to agree with Ex_Brit in regards to my (Full Scan) temporarily hanging @ ( 99%) for approximately (4) mins. Then it progresses from ( Scanning For Rootkits ) to complete the scan.
It seems for some users, it temporarily hangs @ (98%) ?...as he stated it is a known issue, and will be addressed in the future.
The only thing I can suggest, before contacting Technical Support again. Is to "Run in Command Prompt" sfc/scannow to check the integrity of your Windows Updates. Short of resetting your IE11, to default. It may be advantageous to go back to the date your Last windows updates for IE11, were installed (4/8/2014) and possibly uninstall that (update) then run a check for updates, and reinstall a fresh one.
Again, any suggestion that Peter, or any other Moderator-Forum Tech offers superceeds mine. For I am only a user as yourself. I am simply saying that this would be what (I) would do if presented with the same issue. I might add, that I use Internet Explorer 11 as my (Default) and (Sole) Browser.
Wishing you the very best,
Edited for typos
Well an interesting development, on Thursday (24th April) my partner noticed that her IE11 was working normally & also the scan was not hanging up at 98%. Likewise on checking my PC I found the same. Have checked to see if there had been any windows downloads to fix IE11 & there were none. However it appeared that there had been one for McAfee, so did this resolve the issues. But at least everything is back to normal.
Have to say that the help & advice I have received from McAfee has been first class.
Very many thanks to one & all.
Have a good weekend
This has been a known issue (Hanging at 98%) and the Mods-Techs have been aware of this. They have discussed this on their weekly conference calls. I am certain all included will be exhuberated to find this out. I will run a (Full/Quick) Scan myself weather permitting, and report back the results for my Machine also.

I am certain the Mods/Techs/Mcafee will appreciate your Kind words.
May I ask, if you ran a Quick Scan or Full scan?
Thank you for this Information
Perhaps an update was pushed out, but we weren't made aware of it officially. Glad you are OK now.
Evidently there has been.
I am pleased to confirm as well, after initiating a "Full Scan" @ 5:34 am- (98%) @ 6:22am-Completed scan @ 6:22:45 am. Total Items scanned-140,440
So by the following results, I am inclined to agree with the neil.w233, the (Hanging @ 98%) issues are resolved on my machine at least. Will run a "Quick Scan" later this morning.
It seems that with Engine Version 1870.0 has resolved the issue.
