    Rootkit

    halton

My daughter has windows version 8.1. She ran a full scan and discovered that once it was 99% done it took a long time to finish it said it was scanning something called a rootkit. She eventually had to abandon it because it seemed to be hung up on this.

What is rootkit. Is this serious if so how do I get rid of it?

      Thank you.

They are aware of this and first of all when it says Scanning: Rootkit, it means it is scanning for rootkits, not that it's found any.

Secondly they are also aware of the hanging at 98/99% issue.  It does clear eventually but takes a long time especially on some machines.

If it (I mean the hanging part) really worries you try contacting Technical Support, it's free of charge by phon e or online chat and linked under Useful Links at the top of this page
