Can't get to a specific website

    alanarose

Hi.  I am unable to get to one specific website (www.greenvilleumc.com).  I have tried several different browers without success.  The website is up and working, and I can access it on my Iphone and Ipad.  This seems to be isolated to just my home computer.  I have emptied cookies and chache, have run my McAfee antiviurs software, and have run CCcleaner.  I've also tried temporarily shutting down the McAffee firewall.  Nothing seems to work.  I have attached a pdf of the error message I get.  I am using windows 7 and google chrome as my browser.  I've also tried to load the website in Firefox and IE.  Any suggestions? Thanks.

It's a Chrome thing. Chrome does a lot of pre-loading to speed up performance and this sometimes leads to the dreaded Oops message. When you run CCleaner it's as well to make sure the boxes are checked for "DNS Cache" and "Old Pre-fetch data". Sometimes switching off the router for a minute or so clears things. Mostly though there are two things to look for, both in Chrome Settings, as explained in these two helpful articles from Google and from GHacks.

I tried unplugging the router, and running CCleaner again with those boxes checked.  Still doesn't work.  I'm thinking the problem is not limited to Chrome, since it also won't load in Firefox or IE.

Firefox says, can't find the server at www.greenvilleumc.com

Works fine for me. Here's some of the network information for the site.

At least the server is up and working. Maybe you've got a DNS resolution problem? If you can open a command window in Windows 7 try pinging, first the domain name and then the IP address. (That's "ping " followed by either of those).

Edit - alternatively, try these -

              http://www.tcpiputils.com/ping

              http://www.tcpiputils.com/traceroute

and enter "www.greenvilleumc.com" in the input box for each.

                Hi alanarose,

Simply out of curosity, and personally being from North Carolina. I did a search on the Site here-in mentioned. Even though there indeed is a Town approximately 150 miles from where I reside (Greenville-North Carolina)..which is basically Geographically just below the World reknown "Great Smoky Mountains)

Being known as the "Foothills" of North Carolina.

I was capable of securing a site search through Internet Explorer 11. It seems to be a "Religous"

site of souce. ie, "Greenville United Methodist Church"  The Site Advisor Live rating was "Grey". Having said this, I experienced nothing out of the ordinary upon visiting the Site.

Upon due to the fact, I was succesful in reaching the site, it seems that there is more into play

than originally concieved? Here is the link:

                Regards,

                CatDaddy

Upon further anaylysis, it seems that "Greenvileumc" is as stated, a religous assortum. Yet seems to be from New York.

Ping gives the following.  I don't know what this means.

                  Ping for: www.greenvilleumc.com

                  Reply from www.greenvilleumc.com: bytes=32 time=78ms

                  And this:

                  Traceroute for : www.greenvilleumc.com

Executing traceroute... (this can take up to three minutes)

A friend of my daughters mentioned that my computer might have a virus, that a programmer can fix.   Do you think that might be correct?

Okay, so now you know what ping and traceroute results look like. The site you can't reach is reachable by the site you called up to do the ping and traceroute on your behalf. Keep those results for comparison.

Now, open a command window and enter these commands, one at a time :

                      ping greenvilleumc.com

This just says, do I get any kind of response from the website and how long does it take.

                      tracert greenvilleumc.com

This one shows you all the intermediate switching your connection to the website undergoes, so look for timeouts, excessive times for any stage(s), and (once you've learned what to look for) any strange IP addresses that the connection goes through on the way.

Edit - Here's a couple of basic tutorials

                      http://www.mediacollege.com/internet/troubleshooter/ping.html

                      http://www.mediacollege.com/internet/troubleshooter/traceroute.html

If both of those succeed from your PC then the problem lies somewhere, I would say, in DNS resolution.
