Similarly I noticed that upgrading using apt-get on an encrypted, Ubuntu 12.04, 32-bit install broke the entire OS and required an OS re-install. Seems to have been library related.
I don't believe VSEL 1.6 was ever tested on later versions of Ubuntu
But this was a known issue in 1.6 and 1.7x and McAfee Agent.
