McAfee stinger fails to run with Windows XP

The most recent update of the McAfee stinger fails to run with Windows XP (August 2013 update).  We have Windows XP SP 3 but the operating system is captive on a machine and has not been updated in a long time (years).

My understanding is McAfee requires Windows XP updates to work.

      Comments please.

Whatever the reason for not updating XP, if it's not been updated for years then you're missing all sorts of updates for everything from digital certificates to font-handling to IE.  Quite possibly it's IE which is the problem, because McAfee uses IE settings for its displays, and Stinger is possibly using them too.

Of course it could be a different problem. Not knowing what updates are missing doesn't help when trying to guess the cause of Stinger's failure to run.
