    xml files missing after reboot

hi all, hope you can help.

i have a dell pc running  a fresh copy of xp media centre, all updates done, inc service packs. ive rechecked, there are 0 updates available.

i installed total protection 2013 and updated it. it works fine, i can connect online without issue, until i restart the pc.

after restarting neither i.exp nor chrome will connect. if i remove mcafee and restart, they both connect again, so it is definately mcafee

i ran the checker on it and under every heading (email and internet, firewall etc) i get the same error msg that

      "

                                                                            product configuration xml file missing"

      looking online i found this:

      1. Download and install MSXML version 3 (MSXML3.msi only).

      2. Restart the computer.

      3. Download and install MSXML version 4 (MSXML.msi only).

      4. Restart the computer.

      5. Install the McAfee Consumer 2007 Products.

      6. Restart the computer.

i downloaded msxml3 onto my desktop and its sat there in a cabinet file, if i click on it there are 3 files inside, i dont know what to do with it next. The second link links to msxml6 sdk which i downloaded and installed, after installing ive reinstalled 2013 but its still the same.

      pls help

      thanks

There are a couple of old posts about this, but first -

          - What was the "checker" you ran? Was it MVT?

          - Did you run the MCPR cleanup tool after uninstalling McAfee?

One of the old posts I mentioned is here -

          https://community.mcafee.com/message/25950#25950

Macfee replaces a msxml 4 dll with its own version , when it uninstalls prior to upgrade it removes this dll meaning you have to reinstall msxml 4 sometimes prior to installing new version

I can't find a working link on the Microsoft site for XML3, but the download link I have for XML4 is at

          http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=19662

This is XML SP2, which does not replace XML3 - although the link strongly implies that XML3 is no longer needed )it says you can run XML 3 and 4 on the same machine).

Replaced by new link - see below

That Help information looks seriously out of date. Where did you find it?

EDIT - Ah. I see you where you found it. An old answer by Vinod in a thread from 2009 -

          https://community.mcafee.com/message/93350#93350

Things have moved on a bit since then. The latest XML is now version 6 not 4, and XML4 is at SP3 not SP2 - get XML4 SP3 from here -

          http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15697

Okay, please ignore all that stuff about Microsoft XML. I really don't think it's relevant to the problem you're having.

The error message is presumably from MVT, and is referring to a McAfee product configuration file.

The first thing to do is to establish what the underlying problem is. So, get the latest MVT download from HERE, run it, and save the logs it produces to your desktop (they'll be htm files). If the errors are still there in the log files please zip one of the files and attach it to your next post : then we can have a look at the output for clues.

Next, if you have to uninstall McAfee again, run the MCPR cleanup tool before you re-install. That should get rid of any leftover files and registry entries and ensure you start from scratch. After MCPR, run a standard Windows disk cleanup (or use CCleaner) to get rid of temporary files from all other locations.

              hi, thanks for prompt reply,

yes the checker was mvt and yes i did use the mcpr tool, in fact ive used them multiple times now.

i got the link from here https://community.mcafee.com/thread/17926

i have to admit i dont really understand what im doing with these xml sdk things, will i have to learn xml etc to fix this issue?

              cheers

Thank you for the MVT results. I know this one has come up in the past, so if I can find the answer quickly I'll let you know asap. If I can't I'll ask one of the others (who will have seen this before) to take over.

I still think it's not a Microsoft XML issue but, you know, I could be wrong. If it is you may need to re-install all the relevant XML programs (and all the relevant SP patches and updates) from Microsoft, which means extra work :-(

                  • 6. Re: xml files missing after reboot

extra work is not a problem:) i will check back in the morning, thanks for taking time on this

                    cheers
