I just started having the same problem (all localhost applications stopped working on V6 upgrade).
I have followed your downgrade instructions - multiple reboots later, the first thing it did was upgrade itself again (V6.0.0)!
If I follow the instructions to reboot, will the localhost problem resurface, or is this the "fixed" version?
Please let us know the operating system in which this issue has occurred.
I don't know if it's the best solution but i resolved this problem by adding 127.0.0.1 as autorized IP in my firewall.
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2
Firewall Connection Type: trusted network
Thanks for your suggestion, but I am unsure how to do this:
I am set up as Firewall connection type: trusted network so I can connect to/from another local pc.
If I change to Custom, I can only set one IP address range so cannot specify the local subnet AND 127.0.0.1
The only other option I can see is to add rules for each localhost application service/port, but then I cannot specify which IP addresses are allowed to access!
Update - am now getting desperate and have submitted ticket.
It starts giving application/service problems on update even without a reboot, and blocks all of them after a reboot.
Disabling firewall temporarily allows correct function, but this is not the solution!
Also, got "too many licenses in use" after 5.4 reinstall despite same company key/email address/pc name!
As temporary measure will keep uninstalling 6, reinstall 5.4 and not allow upgrade reboot, then repeat when problems surface again!
I have followed the procedure as I was having a very similar problem with a Win 8 pc. When I try and run the installation as per the instructions I get a message that says 'This installation is not compatable with your version of Windows' This worked perfectly well with Win 8 before the upgrade. Now I have a suitation where I can't install the product and I have no protection on one machine. Very disapointed in the quality of this product
when installing version 5.4.0 i get the message: This installation is not compatable with your version of Windows! Why not? it`s working on other PC`s with Win8, which are upgraded from Win7, but fresh installation on Win8 doesnt work... Come on McAfee, please test your applications before deploying it...
edit: i got it working on Windows 8! go to properties of vssetup.exe, go to Compatibility tab, check "run compatibility settings for windows 7" and voila
