As far as them mentioning a service pack and other updates. It is vital that you keep everything up to date these days for your own security.
Including parts of the system you may not use, Internet Explorer for instance if you use another browser.
You can update Java and Adobe yourself. Keep an eye on the installers as they often include an optional extra piece of software which you don't need.
As far as Service Packs go I don't know what operating system this is but here are some hints for instaling service packs.

i doubt that the updates are the problem. before i got mcafee internet security i already had Mcafee total protection installed on the laptop and it worked fine till my subscription was over.. if i was able to install it a year ago. i doubt ill have trouble now. i am actually able to get the insaller started and running. its just that after i log in to my mcafee account during the installation process the installer says that there are no programs to install from this mcafee account.please try again with another account
Here you can try 2 things to check the issue,
1 . Run the below preinstall tool and retry the installation
2 . Try the Installation in a different user, let me know your operating system details so that I can post back about how to create a new user
