Upgrade ePO 4.6 on Windows 2003 32 bit to Windows 2008 R2 64 bit

Our current ePO 4.6 server is running a 32 bit version of Windows 2003. The database is SQL Express 2005. The server is running as a VM (virtiual machine) on a VmWare cluster. Currently, our environment is not managed by Active Directory so we have to manually install the ePO agent on new systems.

Looking at the upcoming ePO 5.0, it seems to mention that it only support Windows 2008 and above.

Trying to figure out the best way of upgrading our ePO server from m32 bit Windows 2003 to 2008 R2 64 bit. We have to also make sure that the clients continue to comuunicate after the upgrade as we don't have the man power to manually fix broken agents.

Has anyone tried an inplace upgrade from 2003 to 2008 R2 64 bit? If so, is there any documentation or advice.

My gut feeling is that it would be better to perform a clean install, but want to make sure that current workstations still communicate back to the new server. Are there any steps to perform to make sure the workstations continue to communicate.
