    DAT files not updating

I'm having a problem getting a few systems in our environment to update their DAT files.
We're running VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i with McAfee Agent 4.0.0.1421.
We have about 3500 systems, and about 30 of them are getting an error trying to update their DAT files.
This is from a log from a system I just reinstalled the Agent and VS on:

October 8, 2009 11:15:13 AM Info Updater Starting DAT update.
October 8, 2009 11:15:13 AM Info Updater Downloading DAT.

      October 8, 2009 11:15:13 AM Info Updater Downloading avvdat-5764.zip.
October 8, 2009 11:15:15 AM Info Updater Error occurred while downloading avvdat-5764.zip.
October 8, 2009 11:15:15 AM Info Updater Update failed to version %NewEngineVersion%.
October 8, 2009 11:15:21 AM Info Updater Update failed to version 5764.0000.

I've removed and reinstalled McAfee Agent and VirusScan Enterprise on a few of these systems with some success, but there are a few systems that it doesn't help on.

Try updating the Engine to the latest version, currently 5400.
Clicking on the link below will immediately open the download dialogue window:
Engine-only Superdat File (Intel) http://download.nai.com/products/licensed/superdat/engine/intel/5400/5400eng.ex e Run this to ensure that the system is running the correct and latest version of the engine.
Follow up with running the SuperDat file as well:
Security Updates / SuperDATs http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security_updates/superdat.asp?region=us&se gment=small Download the latest SuperDAT executable and run this.

Let us know if this helps.

That didn't work. I'm unable to run these executables on the problem systems. They seem to just hang there not doing anything.
I think the problem isn't with the engine itself, but is with downloading the actual files. This is from a system that had the error above when I'd repaired it, but is doing this now, a few days later:

            • 3. VSE 8.5i Patch Level?
              rmetzger
What VSE v8.5i Patch level are these systems?
I see you are using MA 4.0.0.1421.
On those systems that are failing what is the current Engine version?
What is the OS, OS SP levels, etc.?
How much free space is there on the drive?

              Thanks,
              Ron Metzger
              • 4. RE: VSE 8.5i Patch Level?
It turns out the problem is with the server in the location all the problem systems are in (I didn't know they were all in the same location at first). I've bypassed the local server and all those machines are working perfectly now.
What could cause the server to do this though? It doesn't affect all the systems in that location either, but bypassing it fixes all that have the problem.
                • 5. More info please.
                  rmetzger

OK, so maybe the server is the unit that needs to be brought up to speed. Still, I would like to know the details of that server. Without the details we are just stabbing in the dark.

Try to manually update that server and see if that helps.

Is this server running ePO and responsible for the workstation's updates?

When you say "I've bypassed the local server" what do you mean? Details are highly useful.

Could the McAfee Agent need updating? (Possibly on all systems affected.)

                  Thanks,
                  Ron Metzger
