This is a known problem with the solution being downloading the Australian version. However, per advice given elsewhere, I need to log into my account to do that, and I don't have a standalone account with McAfee. I got the Security Center as part of my AT&T Internet subscription.
I am running Win 7 64 bit, and the current product is McAfee Security Center build 11.0678 - several builds past the supposedly fixed 11.0654 version. How to eliminate that desktop icon once and for all? I have an uncluttered desktop and don't need McAfee popping up after every startup like a bad party guest.
Deleting the icon, moving it into a folder, and marking it as hidden don't work on a permanent basis. I am ready, like many others, to switch to a different security suite - one that respects its customers.
See this: https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-3361 especially the very last line. If that FAQ doesn't help then open a case with Technical Support. It's a free phone call or online chat session away. Linked under Useful Links at the top of this page.
