Re why Mcafee does not pick it up
Unfortunately it's a fact of life that none of the antivirus engines are any good against these fake anti-malware pests because of the fact that they act only if there is some human intervention, even the mere dismissal of a popup can activate them. If you ever see any weird popups, power your machine off and reboot. That should hopefully nip it in the bud.
I want to take this time to thank all those who responded to my tale of woe. I believe my troubles have been resolved (at least until next time).
Ran the suggested McAfee scan,(nothing found) then the anti-virus program (Stinger; nothing found), and then performed a System Restore.
Thanks again. As of now my wife is happily back on her desktop (no doubt collecting additional viruses).
Re the restore delete all restore points now so you cannot accidently restore the malware . Then make a current new restore point.
Fortunately for me, the problem occurred on 7/16 and my restore point was 7/10, the last restore point. The next restore should be okay? Right?
Yes if all removed but still delete all points and create a new 1 now.
Did you run malwarebytes after the restore?
