Try doing a repair (either through add/remove programs or virusscan console) and then install patch 1.
Post your results and we'll go from there.
Could you check the registry key
and look for a value Patch_x. It corresponds to the Patch level of VirusScan 8.7.
If it's there, then it could be that during the upgrade from VSE 8.5 to 8.7 this value hasn't been reset correctly.
In this situation, try deleting this value and deploy the patch again.
I checked the registry and there was a Patch_5 entry which referred to virusscan 8.5. The product version entry also referred to 8.5 while I already had 8.7 on my system. Seems that the upgrade fails to correct change the registry.
Anyway I removed Patch_5 and patch 1 installed correctly
