Issues adding certain folders to exclusions in Total Protection

I'm trying to set exclusions for a specific folder for a program. I get a message that I can't because it's a system folder, which it's not. It's a program folder. I never had this issue until the 2012 release. What can I do to remedy this besides not using McAfee?

Is this Total Protection home product or Total Protection Service (ToPS or SaaS)?

Exclusions from VirusScan real-time scanning have not been possible since VirusScan 7, some 7 or 8 years ago.   You can make exclusions from a manual scan or a scheduled scan but not the built-in protection.  We Moderators have been asking for that feature for a long time as have customers via the Product Ideas section.

If software is being misidentified as malicious then follow the procedures here:  https://community.mcafee.com/thread/2016

If this is in fact ToPS then I will move the thread accordingly.
