What kind of repository are you using? if using a http/ftp/unc repository, have you configured a username and password in the policy?
If so, are the account properties still valid?
Have you configured proxy settings in the policy?
If you right click on the AutoUpdate selection in your VSE Console, you should be able to select "View Log." You may be able to get some additional info on the nature of your authentication error.
