Update failed to version Engine: 5301.4018 DAT: 5601.0000

      Hi alltogether,

I had to roll back a complete system-image from january on one of my machines - and now the VirusScan 8.5.0i don't want to make the "big" update vom 5301.4018 to 5601.0000. Turning off the on-access-scanner didn't solved the problem. So here goes the log:

Recently, the newest engine and DATs have trouble starting (causing the error you posted). Usually the problem fixes itself just by retrying, but if it still fails, you should update using the latest SuperDAT.
          • 2. RE: Update failed to version Engine: 5301.4018 DAT: 5601.0000
Retries had the same effect, but using the SuperDAT solved the problem, thanks!

I'm glad it worked. I suggest you make sure you upgrade to patch 8 if you aren't already running it and can get access to it.

I too am having the same problem. Repeated attempts were unsuccessful so have installed SuperDAT and re-booted. Still getting upodate failure.

                Log follows.

                Any advice gratefully received!

The SuperDAT creates a log file in the same folder it was run from. Can you post that log file?

The log shows the AVV DATs are locked. This is either because of Access Protection (which is supposed to allow the SuperDAT access to the DATs) or the scan engine/link driver have a problem with closing an open handle or a runaway thread.

If the problem is Access Protection, an easy temp fix or test is to disable Access Protection and try the update or SuperDAT again.

If the problem is with the Engine or Link Driver, you can attempt to manually disable VirusScan OnAccess Protection (and make sure no other OnDemand or Email scans are active), do the update or SuperDAT, and then re-enable the scanners.

As far as I know, fixes for this kind of issue will require a patch.

In my personal testing, I've found indication that the problem is in the 5301 engine. Some have found better functionality by rolling back to the 5300 engine.

                        Thanks

According to "About VirusScan Enterprise" I am running v8.5.0i with Scan Engine Version (32 bit) 5300.2777 and DAT version 5611.0000 DAT created on 10 May 2009 with one installed patch.

does this mean that the update has succeeded?

                          secured2k
Your DATs are up-to-date (5611) but your engine (5300.2777) is slightly behind the current (5301.4018). The new 5301 engine added better support for NSIS Installer files and offers slightly better detection of threats inside NSIS installer packages.

Because some people have had problems with the 5301 incremental Engine update, McAfee has included packages and KB instructions how to revert and/or force the use of the standard 5300 engine.

VirusScan 8.5i's current patch version is "8". You can download this file from whoever provided you with your copy of VSE.
