Thunderbird won't start when real time scanning is on

I use Thunderbird for e-mail and AT&T/McAfee Internet Security Suite for security. Since the last major update to McAfee, my Thunderbird takes ten minutes to start up. If I turn McAfee real time scanning off, Thunderbird starts in three seconds. So there's the problem, what's the solution, short of disabling real time scanning?

At startup VirusScan scans any emails that are incoming or already in the Inbox of any email clients installed, so if you have emails stored in the Inbox move them out to specially created folders if necessary.   I don't know what changed recently to alter behaviour otherwise so it might be best if you contacted Technical Support about this.  It's a free phone call or online chat and linked under Useful Links at the top of this page.
