    Frequent Updates??

    Bilbo_1405

Hi, I am wondering about an issue that I'm having here. My McAfee seems to be updating at a rate of 1 or 2 times per day.

I don't think that it's having a problem updating but it seems rather frequent for updates.

Is this to be expected or is there some major updating.

My System is Win XP on one and Win 7 on another comp.

      As of 1/27/12

      S.C. 11.0.654

      V.S. 15.0.294

      DAT 6600

      F.W. 12.0.345

      S.A. 3.4.0.143

      Thanks,

      Tom

          That's XP SP3 and Win 7 SP1 I trust?

The current antivirus database is updated at least once every day and there may be other updates at different times to the other components of SecurityCenter.   However, it shouldn't be updating twice or more every day.

Just to be sure it's OK run the McAfee Virtual Technician to see if anything needs fixing.  http://mvt.mcafee.com/

You are in fact 2 DAT updates ahead of me right now so yours is doing better than mine....!  ;-)

            SP 2 for win XP.

This comp goes back to 2003 and the C:Drive is getting too full for SP3 from what I see.

SP1 for 7 and that comp. is much faster updating.

I think that yesterday it updated two times but one had a reboot.

Generally, it is one time per day...never three unless I'm having a longggg day :-)

So, I'd assume that was a program and not a DAT.

It also seems as if mcAfee is taking up about 1/2 system resourses or more a good deal of the time on this old XP.

            Esp. after a boot up.

            Thanks for the suggestion.

              Well,

Virtual Technician scanned and fixed a (1) registry item.

I should reboot to check things out.

It recommended that I update to the Site Advisor Live ..Which I think is for a fee .

But I'm already paying for my McAfee things.

              Thanks,

              Tom

In your XP machine SP3 shouldn't take up any more room, it's really important for security reasons to install it because Microsoft (& therefore McAfee) stopped supporting SP2 in July 2010.   There are some tips on installing SP3 semi-painlessly here: https://community.mcafee.com/thread/2007

It's also recommended that you install IE8, available here:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-8 which again is more secure than either IE7 or IE6.

Plus you might want to install Windows Defender for additional protection (included in Win 7 but is optional for XP): http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17

Those updates sound normal to me.  Mine just updated to DAT 6600 by the way.

Yes McAfee can use undue resources seemingly in XP - updating the system may help in that regard.

Also if you are in the habit of storing emails in your inbox - move them to new folders for storage and just keep the inbox free for new mail.  That will cure a lot of resource hogging at startup.

You don't really need SA Live...your choice.

                    Thanks for your helpful suggestions.

I do like safe surfing with my Site Advisor installed.

For a time, Firefox wasn't compatible and I missed the safety.

It has been working fine though.

                    Thanks Again,

                    Tom
