There are new breeds of malware out there that will not be detected by any of the major antivirus applications, whether it be McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky or whatever brand, because of the way they work and in fact there always have been, just not so prevalent as they are today. Hence the need for specialist software, which has always been something that people should think about keeping in reserve. I've mentioned a few tools, both McAfee and 3rd Party, here: https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-2168
Just read any independent security forum to realise I am speaking the truth.
I understand that there are new malware ever second, but McAfee isn't free and should get ontop of things better. Special software shouldn't be needed. If some other software can find the virus or malware, so should McAfee, isn't that what we pay for? Reguardless once i figured out that the pc couldnt connect to windowsupdate or a search of same, I d/l Kaspersky Rootkit.Win32.TDSS. http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 and found the visrus right away. Virus.Win32.ZAccess.k
That isn't Kaspersky's regular antivirus but a specialist tool they made for that partticular issue, similar to McAfee Stinger which is linked on the page I posted above.
To make a regular antivirus catch everything on top of the millions of viruses, trojans, worms etc. that it already detects and prevents would mean it would have to be so intrusive and agressive your machine would become unusable in no time at all.
That's why these tools are to be used only on occasion.
I quote one of the developers of Malwarebytes AntiMalware (free and available in the link I proved earlier) Bruce Harrison:
As far as why MBAM is very good at dealing with this infection, that is simple. MBAM is designed to be very good at dealing with malware that the AVs seem to be having problems with. I do not spend my time making MBAM detect millions of infections that any decent AV already detects as MBAM is DESIGNED to work alongside antivirus software, not replace it. A huge chunk of the research that goes into MBAM revolves around what we see making it into HJT threads as the vast majority of these threads involve antivirus software that was in some way bypassed.
Lets settle this now and avoid any further misinformation. MBAM is now a very good backup to any antivirus software and will only get better in the future. MBAM will NEVER add antivirus abilities to its core app and is always advised to be used WITH antivirus software. We actually get this question a lot in the forums and I assure you that we always say :
"No, MBAM can't replace your existing antivirus software and is not designed to."
I explored your doc-2168, and have really thought about your answer to my concerns.
I do understand the point of having a program like stinger, but it truly can be built into Security Center, even if just as a link for special scans.
As far as the rest, you are absolutely right..... It makes perfect logic to pay for McAfee and run 4 more free scanners.... Yep 5 programs don't slow down a computer at all.....Yep you are right..... Who in this world would want 1 program to do it all, what as I thinking.....
You quoted Bruce Harrison, "MBAM is designed to be very good at dealing with malware that the AVs seem to be having problems with." In my apparently warped thinking AVs shouldn't have a problem with malware, but you do, that is why you are a moderator for this forum, and I am just a computer engineer - programmer.
Understand this, I will never agree with you. McAfee could do the job of the 4 other free scanners and still not make the computer unusable as you suggest it would, otherwise a computer couldn't run 5 scanners to start with. In my opinion which you clearly do not share, McAfee along with other "major antivirus applications" don't feel that they have to make a well rounded AV, as you provided supplemental programs, you can run other programs that pick up the slack that McAfee doesn't bother with.
I truly miss the days when people and companies cared about doing a good job and making a good product, McAfee did back in the day, not just something that passes.. barley.
Oh well I do commend you for giving your time to help people, but it is people like you, who do give their time to help people deal with problems while at the same time supporting and defending passes.. barley, who should push for a better product. oops there goes my warped thinking again.
I tried. Technical Support could help you better than any forum obviously.
