    How does it work?

I'm on a quest for knowledge here - how does McAfee actually work?

I know the basics of virus scanning i.e. looking for patterns of code etc. but my workplace is having issue with the On-Access Scanner taking up 100MB of memory on a 512MB machine.

So what I wanted to know was why does McAfee use so much memory? What does it use it for? Is there any way we can reduce the usage by, for example, changing our exclusion lists?

We are running McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0, latest DAT updates, scan engine 5300, patch version 14.
