How to safely uninstall VSE 8.5 Hotfix 7?

      Hi,

I have McAfee Viruscan Enterprise 8.5 installed on a standalone Windows XP SP2 workstation (not connected to EPO).

I installed Patch 7, and while the patch install was running, an unrelated program that was running on the system caused the system to be unresponsive for awhile. I got a warning from the Mcafee Patch 7 installer that it couldn't send a "Windows message" to mcconsole.exe and shstat.exe during the install.

After the install, the Mcafee update log file says the install was successful, and the Mcafee VSE "Help About screen" displays Mcafee VSE Patch version 7. But I have doubts as to whether Patch 7 was completely applied correctly. I've invested a lot of time customizing the McAfee Access Protection User defined rules, and so I don't want to uninstall and reinstall VSE 8.5. What I would prefer to do is to simply uninstall Patch 7 and reinstall it. Is this safe to do? What is the recommended way to re-install the same patch again in VSE 8.5? I'm looking for a safe way that will result in a very stable system.

      Thanks

      Bill

If Patch #7 was installed correctly, it should also uninstall correctly from the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs section. (Click on the "Show Updates" box at the top of Add/Remove Programs.)

If it was not installed correctly, and it's listed in Add/Remove Programs but won't uninstall, then you'll be required to do a full uninstall of VirusScan, then reinstall..

          Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. I hope its ok if I ask a small favor. Since I spent so much time adding over 100 User defined rules to the Access Protection (I didn't want to take a chance and uninstall Patch 7 just yet). I would like to verify that all my files got updated by Patch 7. Previously I had Patch 6.1 installed. I did a dir /o:d > dir.txt (after installing Patch 7), and then notepad dir.txt, selected all, copied and pasted it here (of my McAfee install directory). If you happen to have VSE 8.5 with Patch 7 installed locally and could do the same command and paste it into your post, it would allow me to compare my files date/time to attempt to see if all my files got updated by Patch 7.

Here is a listing of my VSE 8.5 install directory after VSE 8.5 Patch 7 was installed. Please note the date/times:

There's no way to know... The data you've provided only provides dates and not version numbesr for each and every file..

It's not clear where you questions are coming from.. Clearly, there was an issue during the installation of Patch #7 but at this point, you're not indicating that any problems have come up.. If there are no real issues from the new patch, and the "About" section shows the new patch as being installed, then my stance is....If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Then again, if you want to uninstall Patch #7, do it from the Add/Remove Programs section.. Yes??

              Hope this helps.

              • 4. Everything is very stable with Patch 7.
                Hi,

I believe everything is ok. The "Help About" for my VSE 8.5 says patch 7. The update log says the upgrade to patch 7 was successful. I've had no problems so far. I exercised all the options on the mcconsole.exe today, and everything works as expected and is very stable.

Thank you again for your replies,
