Need help with an Artimus Infection.....PLEASE!!!

    wildfire

Hello! Last January I was helped by Carlo and Vinoo with a similar problem. I now, again, have had the Artimus fake alert virus. McAfee found it and I thought deleted it. When I rebooted, it was still there. My McAfee was corrupted so I uninstalled it. Upon trying to re-install it, it won't re-install. So, like last time, as per Carlo's long ago instructions, I went to the McAfee website and tried to download the free Security Scan Plus, in safe mode. Well, it doesn't work either. Oh it downloads and installs and when it's finished, I get an error message ..."error initializing Updater interface." So now, even though I bought the disc, I have NO antivirus software. I can't even begin to know how to find it without having some tool to detect it. Does anyone have any ideas?  I've been at it for 10hrs non-stop and I'm about ready to pull my hair out. Please, can't someone point me in the right direction?

I am in safe mode now.  Running windows vista 64 bit home premium edition.  I was up to date on all Windows Updates and all McAfee updates before this happened. Now I'm dead in the water.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

First of all what Vista service pack is this?  Right-click Computer on your desktop or Start Menu and select Properties to find that information.

Security Scan Plus is merely a tool to tell you what security products you need.  You can uninstall it in the normal way via Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program.

What McAfee products do you have installed?  (You say "I have NO antivirus software" which I hope isn't really true - I trust you mean it's not working)

The Artemis detection, does it have a number attached?  If it is Artemis then you must have McAfee installed.

Fake Alert infections are rife and regular antivirus software can't help with most of them becuase they aren't really trojans or viruses.

Try running McAfee Fake Alert Stinger but follow the instructions carefully: http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/free-tools/fake-alert-stinger.aspx

There are also a few tools and suggestions here:  https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-2168

Edit: By the way if it is really an Artemis detection then it has already been dealt with and quarantined and McAfee knows about it.

The only time to be concerned is if it is a false detection or if it keeps happening.

Hello sir! Thank you for aswering my plea for help! I will try to answer all your questions and tell you what I have tried and the outcomes.

First, you asked about properties. Upon rt clicking this is what I found: HP model #m9517c.

Windows Vista Home premium 64-bit, service pk 2

AMD Phenom 9550 Quad Core Processor, 2.20 GHz

As per my initial post, I found a virus with my McAfee.  It said it was an Artimus with a bunch of numbers and letters behind it.  I did not write it down. That was days ago. I thought it was removed. I restarted my computer the regular way because I thought everything was taken care of.  Upon restarting, there were still problems.  I tried to scan again and couldn't because my McAfee scaning would not stay on. It kept telling me that I was at risk and the banner was red instead of green. Prior to all of this I was up-to-date on all McAfee updates and scans and on all Windows Updates as well.

When it would not let me scan, I tried what Carlo had told me last  January about going to the McAfee site and downloading the McAfee Security Scan Plus and scaning with that free tool. I did that and it found nothing. Also last January, my McAfee had been corrupted and Carlo had told me to Uninstall my McAfee and go to the website to "My Account" and  re-download my "Total Protection". He said I could do this anytime I needed to since I had paid for it.

After uninstalling my McAfee, ( now I have nothing), I went to the website to "My Account" and re-downloaded my sotware.  Upon doing this, this is what came up:  INSTALLATION  INCOMPLETE

We could not install any of the security features included in your software. To fix this you can:  Try Again.

                                                                                                                                                                                          Run McAfee Virtual Technician

                                                                                                                                                                                          Contact  McAfee Customer Support

I downloaded the McAfee Virtual Technician and ran it. When it  was complete, it said it could not fix this problem and to re-run it or contact customer support.

At this point, after 20 straight hours, i'm sick of trying. So I next attempted somthing else Carlo told me about. A restore. To make your computer go back to a time when everything worked right.  I tried this. I went back to a restore point a week before all this happened.  MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!

Now nothing works right.  I am in safe mode ONLY. Have NO a/v software even though I have tried 5 times to download it.  I have the McAfee disc with the product  code. I tried downloading it from that, NO GO.

New problem this moring..... In safe mode w/ networking I can go to ANY site except MCAFEE.  It will not take me to McAfee.com! Can you believe that!  I can go anywhere else, anywhere, QVC, Amazon, eBay, anywhere! When I type in McAfee.com, I get a blank whit page that says explorer cannot connect! Can you believe that.

Luckily, I had saved this page to the favorites bar and was able to get back to this page. Luckily the URL for this page is community.mcafee.com/thread/41375 and not  just McAfee.com.

I have downloaded and runthe Stinger tool you suggested. It took almost 6 hrs. and found nothing. I ran it on High Heuristics (sp?) and asked NOT to look in compressed folders.  It found nothing.

There is still so much wrong that I dare not operate in anything but safe mode. I have NO McAfee since I could not  download it from the site and I had already uninstalled mine.

I know this post is long but I wanted to give you as much information as I could as to what I have already done.  I am a senior female who knows very little about computers but I will try to follow any direction you may wish to give me.  I know that no a/v software can stop everything and I will still pick McAfee.  None of this would have happened if my husband wouldn't look at dirty pictures.   Thank you in advance for any help you can give me!

The record of the Artemis number would have been in the Quarantine folder but if you now have no protection then it will be deleted.

What happened last January probably wouldn't help you now as the software has changed drastically, so has the malware environment.

Can you boot into 'Safe Mode with Networking' ?   That's number 2 on the that menu that appears after you've tapped F8 repeatedly while booting up.

That should give you the Internet as well as Safe Mode.

Download, install, update (important) and run a full scan using the FREE version of THIS tool.  (It does all that in Safe Mode with Networking without a problem).

If that doesn't cure the situation download Hijackthis and post its log on one of the following forums for expert advice.  You will have to 'Save as' the installer to your desktop then boot into regular mode to run it.  I suggest you rename it in the process in case any malware blocks it.

If you enable Windows Firewall you will have some protection.

              DOWNLOAD HIJACKTHIS

Do not post Hijackthis logs here, we can't help you with those !

Post the logs at one of these specialist Forums:

              AUMHA

Are you still experiencing the same virus and error problems with Mcafee?  I wish to know how well Mcafee security actually works before using it myself.

All antivirus applications work in similar fashion, sometimes they will detect something they do not recognize as a possible infection, which is what Artemis is, it is a heuristic process that automatically compares an unknown entity against McAfee's database and if it doesn't find it, assigns it an Artemis number.

You cannot judge a product on a few reported incidents, especially ones that are detections, not infections that have been missed and there are some, particularly fake antimalware pests that will slip by even the best antivirus hence tools being available such as Malwarebytes free and Hijackthis and many more.

The best armour you can have is sensible surfing, a good antivirus and firewall, some extra anti-malware tools just in case and very importantly, keep Windows totally up to date including any parts of it that you may not use.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you!  These scans take a long time to accomplish and I have done MANY of them. Thanks to you and your suggestion of a certain "tool" I am now clean again! Strange thing about this time of being infected. Nothing worked in "safe" mode.  Things usually do work, ie- you can download things; not this time. After trying over a dozen times trying to redownload my McAfee, ( with NO sucess), I went "naked" (no A/V software) into the ether and straight to the McAfee site. I re-downloaded my software and immediately shut down and disconnected the machine physically from the interenet. I pulled the DSL plug literally out of the back of the machine.

I rebooted and ran my McAfee in "full scan" as well as Stinger, your special "tool" and another. I did ALL of this in regular start up mode, NOT safe mode(because nothing worked), but with NO physical connection to the internet. The DSL line was pulled out.  I ran and reran all of these scans and when everything was clean and green and re-updated, I plugged the DSL line back into the machine.  I am having NO further problems.  I am clean and green and happy and have warned my husband that if this ever happens again---he can fix it!

Thank you Ex-Brit!! You are a life saver for this old lady!

That is great news .  I'm glad things are OK now.  It is curious that nothing worked in Safe Mode.

I was too!  That is very unusual.  All experience that I have had before led me to believe that tapping F8 while coming up and then choosing "safe mode w/networking" always was safe and dependable when you were in trouble. Don't have any idea why that was not the case this time. Very strange.  Thank you again ever so much for all your suggestions.  You are an asset to this community and company.
