On behalf of Gemius, a pioneering researcher of the internet market and theweb  users in the area of Central andEastern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East I would like to ask forthe opinion of McAfee company regarding the following request:

Would it be possible for McAfee and McAfee-GW-Edition antivirus not to identify Gemius NetPanel research software as a bad file – a threat to the privacy of internet users taking part in our research?

Gemius request stems from the fact that, at present, the internet user who decides toparticipate in the research / to install netPanel is informed by McAfee antivirus that the netPanel software is a potentially unwanted and harmfulapplication.

      Reasoning of our request:

NetPanel is designed for the research purpose only with the goal of collecting the information on internet community, determiningthe profile of internet users, the frequency of the usage of globalnetwork, and, also, for creating the ranking of the most popular websites.

The netPanel software collects the data concerning usage of the internet, e.g.complete URL addresses of websites available to standard browsers, names of programs registered among the computer’s“active processes”, Gemius cookie file number registered on thecomputer’s hard disk.

Additionally, the software collects “standard” data sent by a browser while uploading aninternet web site, e.g.:

      1. IP address of the computer where the softwarehas been installed,
      2. screen resolution,
      3. operating system version (OP),
      4. version of browser.

NetPanelis installed and at every stage used only with the user’s consent. Atevery stage the software can be uninstalled.

As it collects the above-mentioned data, the netPanel software is an indispensible part of the gemiusAudience study. This  project has as its purpose the presentation of a full and complete picture of the internet on24 markets including Poland, Denmark, Israel, the Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia and many others.

Please, keep in mind the fact that Gemius is a memberof the European Association of Opinion and Marketing Research ProfessionalsESOMAR, and abiding by its rules, it respects all the ethical guidelines of theCode, which dictates the way of conducting marketing research projects.

Our main concern regarding the present situation is that McAfee antivirus should permit the installation and use of the netPanel softwarewithout its identification as a potentially harmfultype of application. NetPanel does not fall into the category of spyprograms or viruses in any way.

The error made by McAfee antivirus as describing netPanel as a dangerous file prevents theinternet users from joining gemiusAudience study. The McAfee antivirus ill-classification of the netPanel software noticeably impedes the conducting of the study and undermines the trust in Gemius’ research, at the same time decreasing the belief in the reliability of the results. We feel obliged to emphasize that our methodology is recognized as unique and our research resultsare highly valued on the global scale.

I deeply hope that my comments will contribute to noticing the urgent need tomake the necessary updates to the McAfee antivirus program.

I believe that the steps taken by McAfee will free our work and the study conducted from any further obstacles.
