Please post details as to which McAfee Suite you have installed..
It seems that you have an Enterprise or similar suite installed as the home user's one does will not update in a University network (there is always a proxy setup in that.. at least in majority of the institutions)
Thank you for replying back.
anyhow, my family bought this computer from Dell,
1. it had McAfee software added on to it. to renew the software,we had to pay which we never did. I have tried to remove it going through the control panel.
2. then i went to my university and downloaded McAfee VirusScan 8
3. the other thing is i have this other program called symantec antivirus which one of my friend downloaded (i dont know whether this is a promotional offer for a couple of months and then i have to pay).
Moved to Desktop & Server (Corporate) as this is where support for VirusScan 8.5i resides.
Remove Symantec using this tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Never run more than one firewall or anti-virus.
You should remove all McAfee before attempting to install another application. If you couldn't remove the home version do the next step.
If you have installed the Uninversity supplied version then uninstall it using Control Panel/Add or Remove.
If it wont go then use the manual means here:
Manual Uninstall Of Virus Scan Enterprise 8.5i
Then run the MCPR tool linked in my signature to remove the home version.
Reboot and go to the Uni site and re-download and install.
You might want to scan for spyware too, use the free versions of these tools:
(Do that first).
Regarding the detected files that you don't know whether to delete or not, what are they, name and path, and what is your operating system and service pack?
