Buffer Overflow Protection option not available

      Hi,

I have installed McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i installed with Patch 5 onto a Windows 20003 R2 SP2 server and on the VirusScan console I do not have the option to enable or disable Buffer Overflow Protection. It isnt listed at all as an option.

I have reinstalled the client but its still not listed. We have quite a few servers and I have used the same MSI package to install it on other servers with no problems.

      Server specs are:

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i installed with Patch 5
      HP Prolaint DL385 G5
      Quad-Core AMD Opteron Processor 2356
      16GB RAM
      Windows 2003 R2 SP2 x64

Any ideas what I can do?!

My first question is to get clarification.. You state: "It isnt listed at all as an option. " When you open the VirusScan Console, is "Buffer Overflow Protection" listed on a separate line and if so, is it greyed out so it can't be enabled/disabled? OR...Is it simply not listed in the VS Console? If it's listed but greyed out, have you tried opening the "Access Protection" listing, then UNCHECKING the box in the lower left which "Prevents McAfee services from being stopped" ? Once that's done, can you then enabled/disable Buffer Overflow Protection?

If none of the above steps work, I suggest doing a full uninstall using the information at the link below.. In addtion, if there were previous versions of McAfee, or any other AV, on the machine, also do a full, manual uninstall of the program. (I've posted the uninstall instructions for both 8.0i and 8.5i just in case you need them both..)

            Hi

The Buffer Overflow Protection simply isnt listed on the VS Console.

I did try removing and reinstalling but that didnt work either sad

A full manual uninstall takes quite a long time.. You performed such a manual uninstall before reinstalling?

I DID find the information below about 64bit systems:

Another note from the VS 8.5i License.txt file on this computer:

              When installing Buffer Overflow Protection,
              these limitations apply:

              - If Buffer Overflow Protection is installed on
a computer that already has the McAfee
Entercept or Host Intrusion Prevention agent
installed on it, the Buffer Overflow
Protection feature is disabled in the
              VirusScan Console.

The McAfee Entercept or Host Intrusion
              Prevention products provide more complete
coverage, so they take precedence over the
              Buffer Overflow Protection feature in
              VirusScan Enterprise.

              - Buffer Overflow Protection cannot be
installed on 64-bit or Microsoft Windows
              Vista operating systems.

              Hope this helps.
