These systems seem to work just fine with 5.2.8 and 5.2.9 when SATA operation is configured for AHCI (ATA will not work).
Note: These test were done on systems without the Seagate Momentus drives. They were standard Toshiba and Western Digital SATA drives.
We have several hundred 6420 and 6520 machines with the Seagate Momentus HD. Our scenario is as follows.
We deployed a group of 185 Dell 6520 machines approximately 9 months ago with the following settings:
BIOS Revision: A02 or A03
SATA Operation Mode: AHCI
Operating System: WIndows XP SP3
EEPC Client: 5.2.5
The crazy thing about these machines is that they have all worked without issue until approximately 2 weeks ago. Since that time we have received at least 20 complaints from within this batch of machines that they are getting stuck at the "Resetting Operating System" message on a black screen. At this point the machines will not boot.
We have attempted to update them to the A12 BIOS revision and have had mixed results so far. Some of the machines needed to be reimaged following the BIOS update, others needed to be downgraded to A08 and then worked fine, and yet others ended up getting new hard disks and having no further issue.
I don't know if this is too late to post a reply Simon, but we would appreciate any thoughts on this. Is this something that fits with past reports of similar issues? Is this level of randomness to be expected? Can we expect that a newer release (5.2.12) will eliminate the issues?
There were lots of BIOS issues between the dell an seagate drives we had to work around, but I don't recall this specific combination. For the hour it would take you to throw up a test 5.2.12 environment, I'd say it was well worth a try.
