Real-time scanning won't turn on; MVT won't recognize software on my computer

The McAfee Security Center (Version 10.5) on my computer keeps telling me that "Real-time scanning is Off" and refuses to stay on.

 

I followed the instructions per:

But at step 2,  McAfee Virtual Technician (MVT) questions if I even have a copy of your software on my computer.

Will also mention that this problem popped up about a day after my compter was infected with the Win 7 Total Security virus/malware. (Not too pleased that McAfee let that one through the cracks, but I guess that's what happens when you have to share an internet connection with housemates) The virus/malware has been removed, but the real-time scanning issue remains.

 

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, because at this point all the futile clicking is strongly making me consider different antivirus software.
