I followed the instructions per:
Those instructions are wrong or too long.
Open McAfee Security Center 10.5.
Click on Real-Time Scanning: Off
When you see Real-time Scanning settings, click on that link. Now click Turn On.
Click on Done, if available on that version. I have a newer version.
If you had a virus on your computer, download a trial copy of Tune-Up Utilities 2011 from:
http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ 15-Day Trial Full version
It contains a Tuneup Registry Cleaner. Run it after installing the program.
You can uncheck any , all or none of the Entries it wishes to remove.

Performing a manual Update should resolve this issue the vast majority of times.
If not, try the rest of the steps os this KB article http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS100903
and make sure you dont have any other antivirus or firewall installed on your system, that might be preventing McAfee from working properly.
