Strange behavior from AutoDomain when upgrading from EEM/EEPC 5.2.5 to 5.2.8

Due to the needs of our organization I have been working on a modified version of the AutoDomain script that Simon made available. The base version of his file which I started with was 5.60. From there I added several functions of my own and have tested the autodomain script extensively and it works flawlessly in our test environment on multiple platforms...

Then, I began the process of testing the server upgrade from EEM/EEPC v5.2.5 to v5.2.8, at which time I found something very strange was happening. Prior to the upgrade I had created an install set using my modified AutoDomain script and several other files. I repeatedly used this script to create test machines before the upgrade of the server. Upon performing the upgrade, I updated all of the included files in my autodomain package and then created a new install set based on the same machine group with the only change being that all of my machine groups now have the 5.2.8 Client Files selected instead of the 5.2.5 Client Files which were selected before.

I then tested the new install set which was built using the new autodomain package and the 5.2.8 client files and it worked flawlessly time and again to create the machines.

Now we run into the strange behavior...

If I set the Client Files from 5.2.5 to 5.2.8 on the group in question, then use the install set created from the same group when the server was running v5.2.5 to encrypt a previously non-existent PC, the install set runs, autodomain runs, the PC reboots as I commanded it to do in autodomain at the completion of the script, I login to the machine and it syncs immediately, the new version (5.2.8) of all of the Client Files is downloaded as shown in the client log below:

As you can see from the log, as soon as that error occurs, there is a second sync that happens. At this time it creates a machine with the same name  + 0001 and puts it in the machine group that the install set was created from with only the default users for that machine group added and successfully encrypts the machine. I looked into the whole "Compression" issue and there is absolutely no compression on the drive

I am guessing that I don't have to tell you why this is a problem for us, but suffice to say it does not help with the automation we are trying to achieve if the machine we created, moved, and added users to is never used.

      Any thoughts?

P.S. Simon,  I have the version of autodomain that I am running available. If you need to look at it let me know...

        • 1. Re: Strange behavior from AutoDomain when upgrading from EEM/EEPC 5.2.5 to 5.2.8

autodomain's not involved here - your problem is the client can't create the host file.

how come there are two syncs so close together? Are you running a very tight resync interval via defscm.ini for example?

          • 2. Re: Strange behavior from AutoDomain when upgrading from EEM/EEPC 5.2.5 to 5.2.8

We are not using a defscm.ini file to configure any of the default settings for the clients. We have been looking for information on which parameters can be used but have not found a list yet. Any idea why the host file cannot be created or where I can look to find a reason code?

            • 3. Re: Strange behavior from AutoDomain when upgrading from EEM/EEPC 5.2.5 to 5.2.8

defscm is documented in the EEPC admin guide - page 93 if I remember right in the current version.

re the host file creation, I would check your AV/HIPS logs.

              • 4. Re: Strange behavior from AutoDomain when upgrading from EEM/EEPC 5.2.5 to 5.2.8

I decided to create the defscm.ini with a bootsynch delay of 3 minutes...the double sync doen't happen anymore, but it is still failing to create the host file and thus it creates a new machine object when you sync a second time after initial reboot. Any other thoughts?

                • 5. Re: Strange behavior from AutoDomain when upgrading from EEM/EEPC 5.2.5 to 5.2.8

the 2nd machine is the correct behaviour - my guess is the delay is not long enough - something is slowing the machine down or getting in the way enough to prevent the host file being created. Did you check your AV logs etc?

                  • 6. Re: Strange behavior from AutoDomain when upgrading from EEM/EEPC 5.2.5 to 5.2.8

That is what I was told by the folks at McAfee Support. That the 2nd machine was being created per the program's design. I did check the AV logs and nothing is out of the ordinary. I did find several references to issues with BootCode.INI and System Restore in the System Event Log on the client, but that seems to happen even when it is encrypted.

I should probably make clear again that I am actually creating the machine in the database before the reboot occurs so that I can place it in a selected machine group using the AutoDomain script and several HTAs I created...is it possible this is whats getting in the way? Do you recommend a specific amount of time to wait before the first sync?

                    • 7. Re: Strange behavior from AutoDomain when upgrading from EEM/EEPC 5.2.5 to 5.2.8

creating the machine before the first reboot, and then having the machine pick it up on activation is what AutoDomain, and a million endpoints have done for years - your problem is that your initial activation is failing. That's the problem you need to solve, and I expect will happen with or without AutoDomain (since the two have nothing to do with each other).

Why would you use the 5.2.5 install set though anyway - why would you not install directly with the 5.2.8 one? and what's kicking off that 2nd sync straight after the first? That's not something the client knows how to do on its own...

                      • 8. Re: Strange behavior from AutoDomain when upgrading from EEM/EEPC 5.2.5 to 5.2.8

I believe I solved the problem of the double sync when I set a delaysyncafter boot for 3 minutes in the new defscm.ini file I just created....so that is fixed it seems...and "I" wouldn't install from the old installset, but with over 100 technicians in the field it is bound to happen at some point, so we were trying to address the problem before it happens.

I have been working with this software for only about 3 weeks now, so my knowledge of how the actual client itself works is limited. I understand far more about the autodomain than the actual client. But during my time on the phone with McAfee Gold Support this morning I was able to determine that if I create the installset using the files for 5.2.8.9 and set all of the groups to use the same files and install on a new machine everything works perfectly...this leads me to believe that the problem is with the version mismatch between the installset and the machine group...which is I believe what you are eluding to.

I was told by the technician from McAfee that this is by design the way that the system is supposed to work when a mismatch like this occurs at the time of install. Furthermore they said that if the Autodomain script is creating the machines before the first reboot that we would always have this problem because the client will not recycle the machine object if it finds one following the initial reboot...

Just a few more pieces to the already confusing puzzle I am trying to put together. I really appreaciate all of your help so far as well as any additional help you can provide.

it all boils down to whether the existing object in EEM has a key or not - if it does, the machine can't "take over" the object, as it's locked - so it will create a name0001 object and go with that.

AutoDomain will recycle any locked machine objects so the new activation can use its own name.

both will re-use an existing unlocked object, so if you activate a machine, deactivate it, then install again, the machine will re-use the existing object - this can be interesting if the object is still set to "remove and reboot", because you'll find the new install will remove itself. It's doing what you told it to do after all, but perhaps not what you wanted..
