Internet Explorer Navigates to Rogue Website

Hi All, my IE8 running on Windows XP keeps on navigating by itself to the website http://www.salesmentary.com/index.php/sales. Why is this happening and any advice on how to get rid of this problem??

      Thanks!

          Raven74,

Please open Internet Explorer. Click on Tools and then INTERNET OPTIONS.

Under General, Check what is the Url in Homepage. There are 3 options. click on "USE BLANK "

After this is done, Please click on " Manage Add ons" and then " Toolbars and Extensions". Please disable anything untoward or some thing that you may find suspicious.

Click Apply or OK and then close the internet explorer.

Now, Please right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop and click on Properties and then click on SYSTEM RESTORE. TURN OFF System restore and after that please update McAfee and then run a full scan. Check and see if this resolves the issue. Please revert with the findings.

Open IE without a connection. Check Options to see if your Homepage has changed. If it has, change it back. Check if your browser was configured to a proxy through LAN Settings. Uncheck the boxes if they are checked. Run a full scan. If your scan results return nothing, then you may have a problem. Check which websites you last visited and delete things that were modified if you got nothing from your results. These files should be files that do not resemble system files. If supposed system files recently are modified, then they most likely are not system files and they may be the problem. Keep searching for specific problems and for specific details. Add more details to your post so that others may help you. Good luck.

              Hi Sameer,

Doesn't work, still being directed to the website...anything else I can try?

              Thx

                Hi Alien,

Any specific folder I should look in? Not sure how to check. As for the homepage, that was the 1st thing I checked -- no difference.

                Thx

                  Hi Raven74,

                  Can you try to do these steps;

                  1.    Please  open Internet Explorer and click Tools -> Internet options.

                  2.    Please  click on Connections tab.

                  3.    Click LAN Settings… and a window named LAN Settings will open.

                  4.    Please  uncheck all options and click on Ok.

                  5.    Please  close Internet Explorer window.

                  Thanks.

                    Hi,

Please download and install a copy of this free tool.

                    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Please click on Internet Explorere, Then on Tools

Click  on Internet Options and then the ADVANCED tab. Under the Advance tab, you will see a tab called REST towards the bottom. Please click on that button and say OK for any prompts. Once you are done doing that, please run a full scan with the Malwarebytes software.

                    Kindly revert with the findings.

Look in your AppData folders. The quickest way to access them is through a search in your Account folder by including non-indexed, hidden, and system files or from a Help and Support search for "show hidden" to find it within the folder without a search. It should be at the end of your search under Advanced Search through your Account folder or it's the first one in Help and Support. After seeing the hidden folder (which looks transparent), search through it to find suspicious files, but first try what ConorD62 posted and hope it's the quick fix. Anything modified right before any issues occurred most likely is the source of the problem.

raven74, are you still finding that IE redirects to that site? If your problem has been fixed, we can mark this thread as Answered but if not, there are several steps to work through to identify the reason for the redirection.

The first thing we would need to know is whether you have all the latest updates from McAfee and Microsoft, and whether you have run a McAfee scan to try and find any malware infection that may be on your system. Redirects are not often cured by Malwarebytes alone.
