In this special case I recommend you to use some different product which is optimized as a boot cd/usb. Like this free one here: http://www.avg.com/ww-en/avg-rescue-cd#tba1
I know it's from the competition, but Mcafee doesn't offer something like this.
as far as I am informed, superdat is no longer able to be used for scanning, so you might consider obtaining VirusScan command line. This works roughly with the same logic a superdat scanning used to.

BUT since 8.7 having trouble launching scan from command prompt and usb.

McAfee CleanBoot 2.0 for consumer is in beta right now and due for release in first half of 2011. It's based on WinPE, supports wired networking to update dats from the internet and comes with a GUI based offline scanner.
