The instructions vary depending on whether or not you have last year's version (square taskbar icon) or theis years's version (shield icon)
Double-click the taskbar icon to open Security Center
Click Advanced Menu (bottom left)
Click Configure (left)
Click Computer & Files (top left)
You can disable VirusScan in the right-hand module and tell it for how long.
Double-click the taskbar icon to open SecurityCenter
Click Virus and Spyware Protection
Click Real Time Protection
Click the Turn Off button and tell it for how long to stay that way.
You shouldn't need to turn off anything else but VirusScan.
Systemguards shouldn't even exist...what version do you have? Shield icon or square in the taskbar?
Normally to install a program all you need to do is turn off antivirus....or so I've learned.
Systemguards have been replaced in 2010 by Access Protection and you only need to disable that when messing with the registry.
Yes they take effect immediately.
Thanks, everything seems to be working now, I have the program installed and my protection is back in place.
Howeber, in the Security Center I get a notice that a problem needs to be fixed. When I click on the Fix link, something runs then stops, and the notice is still there. Two items are listed that need fixing: My Computer and its Files and Internet and Instant Messaging. I have not found any buttons or settings to change these messages. My coverage shows as up to date until Oct. 19, 2011. Any clue what these mean?
Okay, I might have clarity—
I had not noticed the popup that said to restart. Now I get a shield in the taskbar instead of a square, and everything seems copasetic as far as protections. Thanks so much for all your assistance!
PS: Half of my grandparents were former Brits. I tell my Spanish wife that accounts for my preference for boiled foods ;—)
