Windows Live Contact List used to Send Possible Virus

I received multiple email notices from "postmaster" in window Live yesterday saying a message could not be sent. The message had nothing in the subject line and had a link in the email to a web site ending in drugs.com...won't put the link in this post. So, someone got a hold of my contacts and tried to send this email out. Luckily it was not delivered. Have no idea how this was done or how to prevent? I was told by McAfee first line support to pay $89 to have their techie search my pc for a virus. I have Total Protection. Didn't totally protect..is this a known issue?
