Since you have already tried to install McAfee and are having issues with it, try to uninstall via Add/Remove programs and reboot. Then run the MCPR removal tool found at the top of this page under Useful Links which will remove any traces of McAfee that may remain and reboot again.
See this link for additional help in installing the software and be sure to use the Preinstall tool which is included in this link http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS100119
Let us know if this works for you
Tyvm for the quick reply, k3tg.
I tried ur method step by step including the extra installation tips. MCPR did a good job at clearing all McAfee software but after downloading the installation file and the installation begins, the bar only moves about half an inch and the changes to "Incomplete Installation".
I can't manually remove it through Control Panel but MCPR is able to completely delete it for me.
I am not familiar with Windows 7 as I have XP on my computer. Could you tell us whether you are trying to install 32 bit or 64 bit software?
I believe Ex Brit and Peacekeeper use Windows 7 so they may chime in and provide some more info to help you.
Did you run the preinstall file? the rootkit is completely removed?
I am installing 32 bit.
The rootkit is gone and the computer doesn;t have any infections. What is the preinstall file? Is it that small "DMSetup" file you get from the My Account?
It seems that I have had a similar problem I have been trying to fix with no resolution yet.
I have spent 2 weeks with McAfee support technicians going up to their level 2 support and them saying I should go to Dell and have them do a factory reinstall.
I have spent 3 frustrating days with Dell support not being able to fix my problem. Dell only did all the things McAfee already had done and would not do the factory reinstall. They only accidentally lost connection with me 3 times.
The end result of all this is I have been about 5 weeks without virus protection and no solution. I am having the same exact issues of downloading software and the installation status bar freezing around 20% completion and after another minute or so a message comes up that says Installation Incomplete.
I am running a Dell 1747 laptop with Windows 7 and Intel Corei7 processor 64 bit. I can download all sorts of software from Windows et al and no problems. It should not be this difficult.
The preinstall file was suggested by Tom and aa FAQ article linked to. It suggests things to do before installing 1 of which is run
Mcafee as supplied by dell or from a mcafee account . IE was mcafee supplied by dell or bought by you online or boxed?
There are reports of issue with mcafee and win7 64bit mainly Blue screens after installation I will ask the Tier 3 techs tomorrow
Oh have you tried Dinz's suggestions here
