DNS resolution of scan targets in 6.8

      Hi,

I'd like to know how DNS resolution of target hosts works from end to end in 6.8. Would someone be kind enough to walk me through that pleaset? Also, are there any configurable settings for DNS resolution?

      Thanks,

      G.

          Hi G,

6.8 uses a very similar method to resolving DNS names as the normal Windows Resolver does.

When creating the scan configuration you have several ways to target a system. I'll focus on the two common ways where names are used.

If the name entered in the scan config was gearoid.smartguy.com MVM6.8 will know this a FQDN and check in this order.

          • local hosts file
          • all configured DNS servers.

If the name entered in the scan config was gearoid MVM6.8 would not know if this was a host name alias or a NetBIOS name. In that case it would check in this order.

          • NetBIOS broadcast
          • Hosts file
          • Wins server
          • All configured DNS Servers - First it checks by using the friendly name in case it's an alias and then it starts appending on each DNS suffix assigned to that scan engine.

          Hope that helps.
