6.8 uses a very similar method to resolving DNS names as the normal Windows Resolver does.
When creating the scan configuration you have several ways to target a system. I'll focus on the two common ways where names are used.
If the name entered in the scan config was gearoid.smartguy.com MVM6.8 will know this a FQDN and check in this order.
- local hosts file
- all configured DNS servers.
If the name entered in the scan config was gearoid MVM6.8 would not know if this was a host name alias or a NetBIOS name. In that case it would check in this order.
- NetBIOS broadcast
- Hosts file
- Wins server
- All configured DNS Servers - First it checks by using the friendly name in case it's an alias and then it starts appending on each DNS suffix assigned to that scan engine.
Hope that helps.
