Upgrade EPO 4.0 patch 5 to EPO 4.5

      Hi,

We are trying to upgrade EPO 4.0 to EPO 4.5, but are running into an error and then the install reverts back. has anyone seen this before? The EPO Server is Windows 2003 and SQL 2005. Searched the knowledge base but cannot find anything that is relevant.

ErrorString=FAILURE: In LaunchAppAndWait while trying to run the following program:

      "C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\EPOLIC~1\Installer\Core\install.bat"

      Return code: 1

      Error Message: Incorrect function.

      CustomAction: MerMod_RunOrionANTInstaller

As well as this error in the Core-Upgrade.log

      BUILD FAILED:

C:\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\Installer\core\build.xml:528: com.mcafee.orion.core.ext.ExtensionException: Cannot upgrade extension console because it is not currently installed

      Thanks.

          Hi,

That looks like it will require some juggling between the database and the XML configuration files for extensions to resolve. Not currently installed normally means 'not found' here rather than the extension actually being missing.

The extensions, their locations and versions are stored in both the DB and XML. They all have to line up correctly or problems with upgrades can occur.

Sometimes with a partial upgrade DB may be updated but not the files (or vice-versa), even after successful rollback.

The checks for daily use are different compared to install/upgrade, so everything will probably work correctly on rollback but still upgrades fail with the same error every time.

I'd suggest you log a support call for this, the extensions configuration will need analysing and picking apart.

          Rgds,

          Rob

                Upgrade ePO 4.0 to 4.0 P7 first, then upgrade to 4.5 P3.

That upgrade path is documented somewhere...

From Last 2 months we are struggling with our many clients those required ePO 4.0 to 4.0 Migration find below procedure.

Recommended procedure for migrating or moving the ePO 4.0 server to a new system and then Upgrade from ePO 4.0 to 4.5

Note:- ePO 4.0 to 4.5 upgrade installation not required any additional software, use standard installation. Required restart after restore or upgrade installation.

                  Server Migration 4.0 to 4.0

STEP 1. Backup from old Server

                  ·        Backup Keystore

                  ·        Stop ePO Server

Right-click each of the following services and select Stop:

                  1.      McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator 4.0.0 Application Server

                  2.      McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator 4.0.0 Event Parser

                  3.      McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator 4.0.0 Server

                  ·        Database Backup

                  1.      Open Sql Management Studio Console

                  2.      Login with Credential  Note:- Recommended to use SA ( Sql Master Account ) to backup and restore the database.

                  3.      Select database e.g “Server_name”

                  4.      Right-click ePO_<Server_Name>, select All Tasks, Backup Database.

                  5.      In the Database field, select the ePO_<Server_Name> to be backed up.

                  6.      In the Name field, type a name for the backup set (example: ePO Master Backup).

                  8.      Under the Backup section, select Database - complete.

                  9.      Enter the Destination section, if a backup set exists and is listed in the Backup to: field, select it and click Remove.

                  ·        Backup Configuration files

Note:- Migration on new server make sure the new installation drive path must be same as pervious installation.

                  Repository Keys

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\DB\Keystore

                  Product check-in

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\DB\Software

                  Software extensions

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\Server\Extensions

                  XML Extensions

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\Server\Conf\Catalina\

                  SSL Certificate

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\Server\Keystore\

Note:- After upgrade sometimes ePO delete all repository list. My recommendation also export repository XML file from old ePO Console and import again after migration.

STEP 2. Installation on new Machine

                  ·        SQL Installation

When installing ePO 4.0, use the original SQL server or a new SQL Server where the SQL backup can be restored. Use the same Authentication type for database connection credentials. For example NT or SQL Authentication.

                  ·        ePO Installtion

Set up a new ePO 4.0 server on another system with the same IP address and Hostname, using the previously specified default Admin password.

                  ·        Using Ports

Use the same port numbers that were used during the original installation.

The server.ini file located in the previous installation (c:\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy

                  Orchestrator\DB)

                  HTTPPort= 80 (Agent-to-Server communication port)

                  AgentHttpPort= 8081 (Agent Wake-Up communication port)

                  SecureHttpPort= 8443 (Console-to-Application Server communication port)

BroadcastPort= 8082 (Agent Broadcast communication port)

                  ·        Apply Patches

After installing ePO 4.0, apply all Patches and Hotfixes that were installed on the original ePO server.

STEP 3. Restore the pervious Data

                  ·        Stop ePO Server

Right-click each of the following services and select Stop:

                  1.      McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator 4.0.0 Application Server

                  2.      McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator 4.0.0 Event Parser

                  3.      McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator 4.0.0 Server

                  ·        Restore Database

                  1.      Open Sql Management Studio Console

                  2.      Login with Credential  Note:- Recommended to use SA ( Sql Master Account ) to backup and restore the database.

                  3.      Select database e.g “Server_name”

                  4.      Right-click ePO_<Server_Name>, select All Tasks, Restore Database.

                  5.      Select the Stored backup file click ok.

                  6.      Click the options and select overwrite database

                  7.      Click ok

                  ·        Restore Configuration

Replace all following backup files with the new server installation folders

                  Repository Keys

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\DB\Keystore

                  Product check-in

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\DB\Software

                  Software extensions

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\Server\Extensions

                  XML Extensions

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\Server\Conf\Catalina\

                  SSL Certificate

                  ...\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\Server\Keystore\

                  ·        Start ePO Server

Right-click each of the following services and select Start:

                  ·        Restoring the Previous Key Pairs

                  1.      Log on to the ePO console with the original username and password from the old ePO server

                    Hi,

We have encountered the same issue and trying since few weeks to address it without success. A case has been submitted at Mcafee but unfortunately they could not provide us with a solution. They have suggested to start from scratch meaning installing a fresh ePO server 4.5. In other words we will loose our current ePO 4.0 P5 server data .

I wonder if some has also opened a case at Mcafee and got another answer that mey be useful for us.

Have you tried updating to the latest ePO 4.0 patch first, as I suggested above?

The migration from 4.0 P7 to 4.5 P3 worked here.

I have installed the epo server 4.0 patch7 but still the upgrade process failed with the same error.

Any other suggestions will be very much appreciated.
