Do you have Groupshield installed on the Exchange server?
If you have then exclusions need to be put in VSE to stop VSE getting in the way of Exchange.
Also I would strongly suggest that you do upgrade VSE to 8.7i Patch 3
No, we don't have GS. We used our firewall to do the email scan job. McAfee on the server just for the safe of the server itself.
I think I'll upgrade to 8.7i, hope it doesn't cause the same issue as 8.5i.

I suspect v8.5i for your probelm. yes mcafee 'SUPPORTS' 8.5i patch 8; but dont count on it, especially if you installed virusscan first and then patch 8. upgrade to 8.7i if possible.
second, try to exclude exchange log folder and database folder from scan.
third, install groupshield for exchange (in addition to the second step) which is the prupose built antivirus for exchange. virusscan cannot scan your message store. using it may corrupt exchange database.
Also, have you changed the update location to v2
I read that they are stopping v1 updates this april. By default 8.5i points to v1 site. dont know if they will automatically re-reuote. but anyway check it out.
