This looks to be a type of Fake AV software, possibly associated to the FakeAlert trojan family. If this is the case, we recommend you to run the McAfee Stinger tool as described at:
It may also be useful to submit samples (suspicious files) to firstname.lastname@example.org for further analysis, in a password-protected ZIP file (password - infected). You can find detailed instructions for how to do this at <http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/submit-sample.aspx>.
You and others at McAfee keep suggesting everybody use the Stinger to get rid of the fake AV trojan / virus.
Isn't anybody there aware of the fact that apparently many of us who have tried the stinger now find ourselves in worse shape than before?
Some are unable to get beyond the welcome screen.
In my case, my computer boots up, but when I try to run ANY program at all, the standard dialog pops up stating that "... file extension (which is ".exe") is not recognized... pick from the list of programs what I would like to open the file..."
Control panel won't open. Task manager won't open. Excel, Word, Firefox, Adobe, nothing will run!
How does one fix this short of taking their machine to a repair shop and formatting the hard drive??
IS there a way tio fix this short of formatting?
I'm writing this from a borrowed machine. My own is dead.
I have downloaded the info you pointed to, and will burn to CD and try to run in my machine when I get back home. I'll let you know how it fares...
Thankyou everyone that helped in this matter, i ran the stinger and it seems to have resolved the problem but i cant seem to get system restore back on so can you help with this. I'm on windows vista with total protection installed. Thanks again, jomaria
Thank you for your feedback !
If you are still having issues with the machine not booting - one of volunteer moderators has put together information on how to create a boot disk, which may be helpful to you. Details can be found at http://community.mcafee.com/thread/6923.
Hope this helps.
