XP+safeboot, tried installing Ubuntu9.10 on a USB HDD. Failure!

first post here. I have a computer (laptop) with Windows XP and safeboot with encryption.

I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a separate USB HDD and I am sure I pointed to the right

disk when I did. Instead Ubuntu installed Grub on the laptop disk.

When I boot the laptop without the USB disk I get a grub rescue prompt.

When I boot with the USB HDD I get the safeboot message indicating:

      "Starting Safeboot. Version 4.2

      Please Wait

Safeboot has been corrupted (error 92h)".

Is there a way to rescue XP and safeboot?

      Thanks in advance.
