I don't understand what is Data Execution Protection?

I noticed whe I am loggin on my computer these few days, I have been getting a message saying that "To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program: Windows Explorer. I tried the don't send link and the computer ends up frozen where Ic an't even log off. I always end up holding the power button for a few seconds and it turns off. When I turn it back on, no problems. I just don't understand this data execution protection. Can anyone hlep? Thank you very much.
