    Is there any McAfee fix for directrdr?

      I seem to have the directrdr browser redirect bug.  Is there any McAffee Fix for this?

          Hi,

          Can you provide some information like ;

          What is the browser you are using ? (Internet explorer or firefox)
          And do they redirect to any specific websites ?

          Regards,
          Dinesh K

            I use Firefox and IE both.  There seems to be a problem with both with erroneous pop up advertising websites.

              after such erroneous pop up advertising websites, I can check my firefox cookies and there is always one to directrdr.com.  Even if I block this cookie,  the blocked cookies will reappear on the next start up and blocked cookies will be clear.

                Hi,

                Certain spywares have the capability of modifying your host file.

                Please check the following ;

                Click on "Start" and then click on "Run". Then Type in "Drivers".
                On the window that opens up try to open up the folder named "ETC". then look for the file "Hosts" and then right click on the file and open it with "NotePad".Check the bottom of the page just below from where it says 127.0.0.1 local host.If you have list of websites remove them all and ensure you have the details only up to 127.0.0.1 information about websites below this can be removed.

                moving thread to home general discussion

                  I checked my drivers/etc/hosts and it is empty.

                  So, that can't be the problem.

                  I suspect it may be some type of spyware that is

                  initiated on start up?

                  Thank you.

                    Hi,

                    This browser redirect could even be caused due to spywares which finds it way to the browser addons .
                    Check whether  there exists any unusual addon in your browser, if found disable them and restart Internet explorer and check the status.

                    In the meantime, I will make some more research on this and keep you posted.

                    Thanks,
                    Dinesh K

                      I checked add ons in both IE & Firefox and nothing uncertain appears there.

                      I have checked these previously as well.

                      I am suspecting something more invasive after searching other online tech sites.

                        More info:

                        I believe there is definitely some type of infection on start up.

                        After a hard shut down in the evening, when I boot up my computer the next morning and open my firefox browser, I usually get an erroneous pop-up.

                        I check my cookies and the directrdr.com cookie is there. I delete it and block it and there are no more problems.  Then the next day when I boot

                        up, the cookie is there again and the blocked cookies are clear.

                          If you suspect it might be a spyware present in start up; Click Start - run - then type msconfig; click the start up tab
                          Try to find out any suspicious start up item in (manufacturer tab)  in msconfig start up and disable them. (see image)

                          Restart the computer and check how the browsers work .

                          Regards,
