Are you behind a university proxy wall if so, check with whomever is in charge of the IT dept if updates aren't occurring?
I tried the instructions on both of those links and neither of them have worked. I first ran into the problem when I was using a University network, but recently I've been accessing the internet at home and am still encountering the problem.
Detection Signature files are b/w 8 - 29 days old means that McAfee software is not getting updated..
For McAfee to update it requires good/stable Internet connection.
So first please tell me more about the Internet connection that you are using.. ( Wireless, Adsl, or dialup ) ?.
2. Is the TIME and the DATE on the computer proper. ?
3. Have you installed or did u try to install any other Antivirus software apart from McAfee on the computer. ( Even if it's removed please Mention )
4. Did you notice any weird behavior on the computer ( virus like behavior ) on the computer ?
5. Did u perform a System restore on the computer for any reason..
6. Try to download and run MVT on the computer from the link below :
At my home, we use DSL, but I access it through wireless....
The time and date on my computer are correct.
I tried to install symantec a few months ago but i removed it before I installed McAfee.
The only weird behavior I guess I have would be that my anti-virus has stopped updating. Other than that, I haven't noticed anything unusual.
The last system restore I performed was about a month before I downloaded and installed McAfee.
When I try to use the virtual technition it says it is unable to get product data from the server. That has happened every time.
Please try the following steps below.
Check and delete if you have any other security software in add/remove program or C:/program files and common files.
Click on "Start" and then click on "Run". Then Type in "Drivers".
On the window that opens up try to open up the folder named "ETC". then look for the file "Hosts" and then right click on the file and open it with "NotePad".Check the bottom of the page just below from where it says 127.0.0.1 local host.If you have list of websites remove them all and ensure you have the details only up to 127.0.0.1 information about websites below this can be removed.
Once done save the files and try to update McAfee.
I tried all of that, and still no luck =/
After installing Mcafee did you perform any recent changes for the computer (like a system restore) ?
Also check and delete if you have any other antivirus softwares in C:/program files and common files.
May I know what is the type of internet connection ?
I have not made any recent changes to my computer since I've downloaded and installed McAfee. I've checked for other antivirus software in the places you suggested and found none. And I am connecting to the internet through wireless at my home.

A new virus definition file is downloaded. This is a large file, and might take some time to download. After the new definition file is downloaded, (when the spinning icon disappears) the Protection Status will go back to green.
